Mass Readings: Isaiah 55:10-11/Romans 8:18-23/Matthew 13:1-23 or 13:1-9

Great Storyteller

James Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, loves to tell stories. His sermons and letters are peppered with great narratives. He once expressed his dismay after hearing a sermon which lacked any type of anecdote. He found himself silently saying to the preacher, “Aren’t you going to tell us a story?” Dobson knows that people remember tales long after they’ve forgotten philosophy.

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus defends His use of stories. His disciples ask, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” And Jesus replies: “Because they work.” (I’m paraphrasing.) Sometimes, we might think that only the silent contemplation of the mystics or the exhaustive commentary of biblical scholars carry us to the heart of God’s message. Jesus makes quite clear that a good story, well told, works wonders.

Prayer: Jesus Christ, thank You for being such a great storyteller.
