Mass Readings: Habakkuk 1:12–2:4/Matthew 17:14-20

Unless You Believe

“Don’t send a boy to do a man’s job” is a saying we used to hear a lot. I suppose today one would more properly say, “Don’t send a child to do an adult’s job.” In any case, today’s Gospel tells us of a loving father whose son has serious mental issues. The father approaches the disciples who try to heal the child but to no effect.

Jesus is more than disappointed in His disciples; He’s angry, and pretty much says, “Why do I even put up with you losers?” Jesus proceeds to heal the boy himself. For what must seem like the hundredth time, Jesus tells His disciples—and thereby tells us—we can’t just “go through the motions” of doing God’s bidding. We need faith—genuine, deep, sincere.

Prayer: God of power and might, God of love, increase my faith.
