Practicing God’s Presence
My son struggles with his handwriting. So whenever he’s tackling homework, I urge, “Practice writing neatly,” hoping that by constantly and consciously working on it, writing clearly will gradually become second nature.
In “The Practice of the Presence of God,” Brother Lawrence says, “We must know before we can love. In order to know God, we must often think of Him. And when we come to love Him, we shall then also think of Him often.” Today’s Gospel introduces Anna, who, “never left the temple, but worshiped night and day.” Anna’s “practice” of the presence of God prompted her to instantly recognize Israel’s long-awaited redeemer even in the unlikely form of an infant. How can I live each moment in awareness and awe of God’s abiding presence within the “temple” of my heart?
Prayer: Abide with me, precious Lord, every moment, of every hour, of every day.
