Two days after elevating 19 men to the level of cardinal
, Pope Francis Monday established a new Economic Secretariat for the Vatican to oversee all economic and administrative activity. This announcement comes a week after Pope Francis met with his "Group of 8" cardinals Feb. 17-19
to discuss financial matters. According to Catholic News Service
, Australian Cardinal George Pell of Sydney has been tapped to lead the new secretariat.
At Mass with the new cardinals Feb. 23, Pope Francis reminds the men they are servants, not members of a "royal court."
"May all of us avoid, and help others to avoid, habits and ways of acting typical of a court: intrigue, gossip, cliques, favoritism and preferences," he said. "May our language be that of the Gospel: 'yes when we mean yes; no when we mean no. May our attitudes be those of the beatitudes and our way be that of holiness."
