Adoration intentions

Q. My friends and I debated the culpability of falling asleep in adoration. Is it acceptable to fall asleep accidentally? How about intentionally after we’re done praying?

A. Here’s a reply from Msgr. Charles Pope:

Something done accidentally is not matter for sin, unless it is the result of woeful neglect. To intentionally choose to nap is not the purpose of adoration. Adoration implies an attentive, loving and conscious worship of the Lord. To the apostles who slept in his presence, he said, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the tests” (Mt 26:40-41).

The Lord knows our weakness but counsels us to be sober and watchful.
