When thinking of almsgiving, what comes to mind? Serving the poor. Caring for the sick. Tithing. Going outside of our day-to-day lives, experiences and people — these are all very good. But what about those closest to us? With hectic schedules and countless ways to be involved in one’s community, family and friends don’t always get the love.
Lent can be a time to reach out to a brother, sister, cousin or friend. Take some time to call a close friend or family member, especially those geographically far away. Feel too busy? As a priest said in a recent homily, we all have the same 24 hours in a day. As he encouraged, “Make the time.”
Each week during Lent I am sharing a quick tip on each of the three disciplines of the season: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. So tune in throughout the coming weeks for more ideas! Have a blessed first week of Lent!
