Catholic Stars of 2013: Mother Dolores Hart, O.S.B. Former actress-turned-abbess, and now popular author

To say that Benedictine Mother Dolores Hart, known as the nun who kissed Elvis, has had an incredibly eventful year would be a huge understatement. At 75 years of age, the prioress of the Benedictine Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Conn., undertook an impressive journey across the country to promote her new memoir, “The Ear of the Heart” (Ignatius, $24.95).

Her story centers on her decision, 50 years ago, to leave Hollywood — and her fiancé — at the peak of her acting career to enter cloistered religious life. As she toured the country, Mother Dolores touched countless hearts with her soft-spoken, poignant words and natural charm. In addition to speaking and book signings, Mother Dolores appeared on many television shows including the Turner Classic Movie channel with Robert Osborne, Fox News and several EWTN shows, and she filmed an upcoming three-part series for EWTN.

No stone was left unturned within the Catholic realm, and Mother Dolores was featured in almost every Catholic media outlet, and in every major and local newspaper along her tour route. She was interviewed on many radio shows, including the “Tavis Smiley Show” and NPR’s “Here and Now.”

Mother Dolores’ strenuous book tour whisked her away from her beloved community life at the abbey, so while she immensely enjoyed seeing and experiencing the vastness of the Church while out of the confines of the cloister, she is happy to be back at the abbey in Bethlehem. There, she continues to join her sisters in community life, prayer and chanting.

Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle is an EWTN TV host and author of several books, including “Mother Teresa and Me” (OSV, $14.95).
