Mass Readings: Amos 8:4-6,9-12/ Matthew 9:9-13
Way of Life
When I first started teaching at the U.S. Naval Academy, I’d look at my students and think of my own children. Now, I think of my granddaughters, who in a blink of an eye will be as old as my students now are.
My photo calendar this month has a picture of those granddaughters at a Fourth of July celebration. Each precious, little girl is sitting on a family member’s lap, watching fireworks. A simple, family moment, played out across the United States today. Those moments are defended by our military, an often invisible presence to whom we owe our very way of life. My two decades at the Naval Academy have given me an enhanced gratitude for the liberty Independence Day represents. A liberty I hope never to take for granted.
Prayer: Dear God, please protect our military.
