No Folly Needed
In today’s reading from Kings, Solomon asks God for wisdom and God is pleased by the request. There are five Wisdom books in the Old Testament, each one providing sound advice on living.
Sometimes, of an evening or a quiet afternoon, I flip to the Book of Sirach or the Book of Proverbs. I’ll read long passages, absorbing the nuances of wisdom and listening for calm instruction. My own actions have tended to be quite foolish at times. Reading and re-reading the Wisdom books keeps me grounded. I’m reminded I don’t want to be the “fool returning to his own vomit.” I want wisdom to sit at the gates of my house and my office and my car. I don’t want to leave trails of ruin in my wake. Like Solomon, I ask for wisdom.
Prayer: Lord of Life, grant me wisdom.
