Mass Readings: 1 Kings 8:1-7,9-13/Mark 6:53-56
Holiness in the Least
The Old Testament reading today shows us a scene of great pomp as the Temple of Solomon is dedicated. The ark of the covenant, God’s dwelling place on earth, is carried with great ceremony and installed at the Temple and the cloud of glory descends there as the sign that God is with the people of Israel. God, being the true king of Israel, is carried from place to place just as ancient near eastern royalty were.
In the Gospel, someone else is being carried just as the ark was: the sick. And the Son of David comes to minister to them as Solomon waited on God in the Temple. As King Jesus says, whatever we do to the least of these, we do to Him.
Prayer: Jesus, King of Kings, help us to see You hidden in the least of these.
