Mass Readings: Jeremiah 31:31-34/Matthew 16:13-23
The Keys to the Kingdom
In my early writing career, I worked with the Franciscan Friars who operated St. Anthony Messenger Press. Father Peter had played a key role in the publishing company for generations. After several years I had gained the respect of the Franciscan owners so one day Father Peter took me to the basement of the facility and showed me all the controls for our facility—the boiler, the main electrical and temperature controls, everything. After explaining many details of this infrastructure, he gave me my own key to this center of power. I knew that I had finally “arrived”—I had been given “the keys to the Kingdom,” as my co-workers kidded me.
Father Peter is now another “Saint” Peter, I am certain. It was quite a feeling being entrusted with something few others could claim.
Prayer: St. Peter, we pray for your intercession in opening doors to Christ for us.
