Mass Readings: Acts 5:17–26/John 3:16–21

The Cross Again

We started this month’s meditations with gazing at the crucifix, letting that image penetrate us. With today’s Gospel reading, it’s appropriate to look at the crucifix again. “God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (Jn 3:16). Jesus died on the cross, then, to open for us the gates of heaven.

Even the Risen Christ, we heard last week, bears the wounds of the crucifixion on His body. There are crucifixes holding the glorified Risen Christ, with His wounds visible, rather than the more familiar suffering Christ. Try to find such a crucifix and let it remind you that, as we can’t let Good Friday hide Easter, we can’t let Easter hide Good Friday.

Crucified Christ, help me to understand the mystery of Your suffering, death, and Resurrection.
