Mass Readings: Isaiah 38:1-6,21-22,7-8/ Matthew 12:1-8
Pharisee in the Pew
After receiving Communion, I cherish the few moments of prayer back in my pew. But in recent times it’s been pretty hard to garner any silence in those moments as the church can be quite noisy. I’ve learned to tune out the noise, but the sound of the slamming doors as people leave the church right after Communion grates on my nerves.
Last Sunday, I counted 10 slams of the door as people hastened to reach their cars before the end-of-Mass crowds. After Mass, I said to a friend: “Wasn’t it irritating? All those slamming doors as people left early?” He replied, “What slamming doors? I didn’t notice.” And suddenly, I felt like the Pharisees in today’s Gospel. So intent on counting the sins of others that I failed to notice my own lack of charity.
Prayer: Please, Lord, increase my charity.
