Called to Serve

The word deacon comes from the Greek “diaconos” which means servant. A deacon has a continuing call to service. I gave my husband Jack, a permanent deacon, a personalized barbeque apron complete with potholder and utensils. Its inscription reads, “Deacon Jack Called to Serve.” It’s brought more than a few comments when he wears it helping out with the parish meals.

There are three great martyrs in the early Church who were also deacons: Stephen who died in Palestine, Lawrence who died in Rome, and today’s Vincent who died in Spain. Under very extreme tortures Vincent was true to his faith and died at last in eager expectation of his glorious union with Jesus. His incredible example has inspired for centuries. This is a good day to remember and pray for deacons everywhere — and, if married, for their wives!

Prayer: Vincent, Lawrence, and Stephen, please intercede for all the deacons.
