Mass Readings: Micah 6:1-4,6-8/Matthew 12:38-42
Sister Lawrence Louise was my second-grade teacher. I can’t remember her face. Only her graceful habit and stern ways with a ruler. Over the decades, she’s become the iconic nun for my family. We toss her name about whenever we remember the stereotypical sister. Today’s feast of St. Lawrence of Brindisi brought her to mind again.
I wonder if she chose the name Lawrence because of today’s 16th-century saint. A Doctor of the Church and a Capuchin, Lawrence of Brindisi spoke and wrote several languages. He helped raise an army and became its chaplain. He helped convert Jews and fight Lutheranism. He produced nine volumes of sermons. Today’s saint helps me remember a long-ago nun who labored in the vineyard just as assuredly as any saint.
Prayer: St. Lawrence of Brindisi, help me recognize the saints in my midst.
