Thumbs-up to pro-life

The media called it “the coolest baby ever.” They were referring to the adorable ultrasound image of a baby appearing to give big thumbs-up sign from the womb. The ultrasound photo was first posted on the dad’s Facebook page in late August. But when the baby’s uncle decided to post the picture on the popular news and social networking website Reddit, it went viral, catching worldwide attention.

The hosts of ABC’s “Good Morning America” couldn’t stop gushing over what they also lovingly referred to as the “Fonzie Fetus,” harkening back to the popular 1970s TV show “Happy Days” and its tough-guy character Fonzie, who was known for giving his famous thumbs-up gesture.

The parents are actually expecting twins, which caused the “Good Morning America” crew to also wonder out loud about what kind of gestures they might expect to see from the other baby in the womb. Maybe a peace sign, one of the anchors proposed.

And if you were to grab your remote that morning and switch to the “Today” show on NBC, you would have seen and heard more of the same very positive reaction to some very sweet activity in utero. One network host talked about how the baby — who hadn’t even been born yet — had become a huge social media sensation. Other talk shows and their hosts did the same, talking about Fonzie or thumbs-up baby as if they could not get enough of the very special snapshot of life.

You might be saying to yourself, “So what’s the big deal? It was a very pleasant, up-beat story for a change, and all the media were suffering from a wonderful case of Fonzie baby fever. So what?” Well, in a normal world, having the media refer to an actual baby as a baby would be no big deal; it would actually make perfect sense. But we don’t live in world that is normal or a world that is used to applying common sense even when it is so blatantly obvious. That’s why the media’s reaction was a big deal. It was what I like to call a “God moment”; not a coincidence but a “Godcidence.” The ultrasound photo was a reminder from God regarding the dignity of every person from womb to tomb.

Remember, many of these folks who were tickled pink by the adorable photo are the same ones who have bought the pro-abortion arguments hook, line and sinker and have been doing everything they can to sell the same song and dance to the general public. Whether it’s the alleged “war on women” or “reproductive health” mantras preached by the likes of NOW and NARAL-Pro Choice America, most of the media in many ways have become a megaphone for legalized abortion and contraception on demand.

How many times have you heard the word “baby” used when abortion or contraception coverage is being discussed? Usually the child in the womb is referred to as “a choice” or a “blob of tissue,” and fertility is treated like a disease that needs to be cured. However, you didn’t hear, read or see members of the press using such cold terms when it came to the little Fonz. Instead, they stated the obvious and actually only used the term “fetus” a few times; mainly because it was catchy and allowed for some usage of alliteration when used along with the name of a much loved TV character.

This was definitely a huge teachable moment. How beautifully the Lord used someone who has yet to utter a sound or a word to speak so loudly and clearly about his most precious creation. Who knows how many in the media — as well as how many others seeing the ultrasound photo — will finally start connecting the dots and realize how precious each and every life truly is.
