Gestures of peace: Pope Francis in the Holy Land

On a three-day whirlwind tour of Jordan, Palestine and Israel, the Holy Father walks a political tightrope while bringing a message of reconciliation and peace.

Pope Francis is a man who knows how to make the most of a gesture.

Throughout his three-day pilgrimage to the Holy Land May 24-26, the pontiff gave many speeches, but it was through simple actions that the pope truly exemplified his heartfelt desire for reconciliation and peace in the Mideast.

It’s at these moments when, as the saying goes, a picture really is worth a thousand words. This week’s In Focus offers a visual recap of Pope Francis’ journey to Jordan, Palestine and Israel — a journey that the pope has been quick to remind onlookers was first and foremost a pilgrimage of prayer.

As Pope Francis navigated the political minefields so prevalent in that corner of the world, prayer — whether through private reflection, with leaders of other faiths or through the celebration of the Eucharist — took center stage. And this is what we’ve tried to capture in this slideshow. We hope you enjoy the following visual tour of Pope Francis’ pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
