Mass Readings: Acts 7:51-8:1a/John 6:30-35

Bread of Life

My husband and I love to go on cruises. We sail on Holland America because of its commitment to always have a Catholic priest on board serving as chaplain. Every cruise becomes both a pleasure and a pilgrimage. Except . . . on a 28-day voyage to the Amazon River the assigned priest literally missed the boat. No Eucharist for a month. Abstinence made me aware of how precious the Mass is to me. I returned to Seattle hungry for Communion and grateful that it’s always available.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, “I am the Bread of Life.” The crowd doesn’t get it. We, however, do. We know the preciousness of the food that “comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for sending us Your Son to be Bread for the world.
