Mass Readings: 1 Samuel 16:1b,6-7,10-13a/Ephesians 5:8-14/John 9:1-41 or 9:1,6-9,13-17,34-38

How Long, O Lord?

I freely confess that when I open the missalette at Mass on a day like today and see the length of the Gospel reading I give a little sigh. I hope it’s a quiet one. I’m afraid I’m such a product of my times that I don’t want to sit through — or worse, stand through — a lengthy reading at Mass. On a day like today, I earnestly hope, if not actually pray, that the priest or deacon will choose the shorter option.

It isn’t just my general, 21st-century impatience, it’s also knowing “the end” of the story. Today? Spoiler alert: The blind man is healed and comes to believe in Jesus. I know I need to get better at being patient and listening more attentively. Unfortunately, the only way to do that is to be more patient and listen attentively!

Prayer: Sorry for the whining, Lord. I’ll work on that.
