Mass Readings: James 1:1-11/Mark 8:11-13
Humorist Robert Benchley once said there are two kinds of people in the world: those who divide the world into two kinds of people and those who don’t. I divide the world into people who ask questions in order to find things out and those who ask questions in order to keep from finding things out. The Pharisees in today’s Gospel emphatically fall into the second category. Every demand for a sign they made was a stalling action to keep from facing the implications of what Jesus had already said and done. They didn’t want a sign. They wanted to avoid the signs they’d already received.
I do that sometimes, especially when God threatens to strip me of my riches of pride, comfort, pleasure, or power. I look for escape hatches. How about you?
Prayer: Jesus, give me the courage to accept and do Your will without dodging it.
