Mass Readings: Sirach 15:15-20/1 Corinthians 2:6-10/Matthew 5:17-37

Lots of people think Jesus came to deliver us from having to obey God’s law — as though our happiness and salvation could come from doing as we like and not doing as God requires. But Jesus’ point is not “ignore the law” but “understand the law’s implications.” External sins are just the noxious weeds that grow from the seeds of sin in the soul. That’s why He tells us He came to fulfill, not abolish, the law.

The law is like an x-ray. Shine it on your soul and you see where the cancer and broken bones are. But once it has done that, it’s done all the law can do. After that, we need the divine Physician to heal us. And heal us He will, if we just ask.

Prayer: Jesus, help me — by Your grace — do what God commands in His law.
