Mass Readings: 1 Kings 11:29-32;12:19/Mark 7:31-37
If a politician were to announce his candidacy for the White House at Valley Forge, he would be saying something symbolic about his connection to American history. The Gospel writers do something similar by mentioning the geography of Jesus’ miracles. In the Old Testament reading we see the origins of the civil war that split the 10 northern tribes of Israel from the house of David forever. That civil war also led those tribes to abandon the God of Israel and worship false gods, resulting in the eventual destruction and deportation of those tribes to the four winds.
Now Jesus appears in exactly the place where Israel became deaf to God to open Israel’s ears again and bring forth praise to the God they had abandoned long ago.
Prayer: Jesus, open my ears to hear You and my lips to praise You.
