OSV is again an award-winning newspaper

A healthy-sized contingent from Our Sunday Visitor attended the Catholic Media Convention last month in Pittsburgh.

These are tough days for many in the Catholic press, but a number of us detected some obstinate hope among attendees. I like to think that is at least in small part because Greg Erlandson, president and publisher of Our Sunday Visitor Publishing and a highly respected member of Catholic media in North America, assumed the presidency of the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada (for more, see his column this week, Page 18). He’s got vision and energy.

It also was formally announced that Our Sunday Visitor, in partnership with The Criterion, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, will be hosting next year’s Catholic Media Convention. That’s special for us because 2012 is also our 100th anniversary.

But before we throw ourselves headlong into preparing a standout convention for our colleagues, we’re taking a few moments to enjoy the awards OSV Newsweekly and the www.osv.com website received this year. Here they are, with judge’s comments in brackets.

◗ Best Regular Special Supplement, Second Place, “Respect life: On a life-saving mission,” by OSV staff [“A well-put together, comprehensive section. Strikingly beautiful cover.”]

◗ General Excellence (National Newspaper), Second Place [“Clean, easy to digest format. Well-organized, well-edited. Thought the tea party cover story was a good example of national reporting.”]

◗ Best Publisher Website, Third Place [“Good layout and well-written captions draw readers in.”]

Thanks to all the members of the team(s) who work day in and day out to make OSV Newsweekly the best Catholic newspaper it can be. And thanks, too, to our readers for their loyalty, engagement, support and prayers!
