Mass Readings: Ezekiel 18:21-28/Matthew 5:20-26
Today’s Gospel has Jesus warning the crowd about how the scribes and Pharisees act. At that time and place, a “scribe” was, in some ways, the equivalent of today’s lawyer even though now we tend to use the word scribe to mean a writer. And that’s why any of Christ’s comments to, or about, “the scribe and Pharisees” hits a little close to home for me. I’ve been a writer for a long, long time.
I think, I hope, it helps me identify myself with that group for whom Jesus has sharp words and less than flattering descriptions. It would be foolish for me to think I’m always the “good person” He talks about in His parables and teachings. Sometimes the stories about “those people” are about me.
Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, for speaking to me in parables. You’re a very good story-teller.
