Mass Readings: James 5:9-12/Mark 10:1-12

Keep Your Word

Both James and Jesus focus our attention on the need to be as good as our word. James, like Jesus, tell us to let our Yes be Yes and our No be No. It’s not necessary to beef things up with oaths to God, because if we don’t mean to keep our word there’s no point in calling Him as a witness to our lie. In the same way, Jesus calls us to recognize that the word of fidelity given in marriage creates a lifelong bond between man and wife. The fidelity He calls us to is only a shadow of the unbreakable bond of fidelity He shows us in the marriage of Christ the Bridegroom and His Bride the Church.

He has never broken His word and He never will, because He is the Word.

Prayer: Jesus, Word of God, help me be true to my word.
