Mass Readings: Acts 1:15-17,20-26/John 15:9-17

Bearing Fruit

In today’s Gospel Jesus says, “I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain.” How long will that be? I used to think the effect of my life would be like a pebble dropped into a pond. Ripples would extend out in ever-fainter lines until they disappeared. Then a catechism class taught me something different: The fruit of what we do here on earth will go on and on, lasting up to the Final Judgment, even centuries or millennia in the future. Whoa!

Jesus has chosen us, appointed us. Our work — our very life — is incredibly important. What seems like ordinary work will have a lasting impact on generations we can’t imagine. What a privilege. What a calling. What a grace.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for calling me to serve You. I entrust my work to You.
