Mass Readings: Jeremiah 7:23-28/Luke 11:14-23

Rich Without Wealth

In today’s first reading God reminds the prophet Jeremiah what He had said to the Israelites: “Listen to my voice . . . Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper.” Prosper? That sounds good to me. Not rich but — how to put this? — “comfortable.”

But, as you well know, “walking in God’s ways” isn’t the road to monetary riches. And, as you also know, those who run in the opposite direction sometimes have the fattest bank accounts. You and I both know what “prosper” means in the first reading. And even if we aren’t running in the opposite direction, it certainly can be tempting to take a few little detours.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me more generously share the many riches You’ve given me.
