Mass Readings: Ezekiel 12:1-12/Matthew 18:21–19:1
No Greater Love
Today we celebrate the feast of a man who truly went all the way with his faith. “No one has greater love than this,” said Jesus, “to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (Jn 15:13). St. Maximilian, a priest, volunteered to die in place of a stranger in a Nazi death camp in 1941. I spent a full day at the national shrine dedicated to this man some years ago. I remember spending $80 in cab fares! But I also was so moved by his life story and witness.
His life makes me think of the question sometimes asked: Why don’t they build cathedrals anymore? Answer: People used to have convictions; now they have opinions.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me the courage to have convictions.
