Mass Readings: Deuteronomy 4:1,5-9/Matthew 5:17-19
Both Teacher and Student
In today’s first reading Moses is delivering God’s message to the Israelites: “Take care and be earnestly on your guard not to forget the things which your own eyes have seen, nor let them slip from your memory as long as you live, but teach them to your children and to your children’s children.”
The older I get the more I tend to consider what it is I want my children and grandchildren to really know. What are mistakes I made that I would like them to avoid? Or at least recognize and have some idea of how to correct. And what have I done right? What do I truly value and how am I teaching them that by living it? There’s another side to this, of course. Thank God for the many good things those younger generations teach me!
Prayer: Rabbi — Teacher — help me pay attention to today’s lesson for me.
