Mass Readings: 2 Samuel 7:4-17/Mark 4:1-20

Happy Ending

If you had walked into our hotel room one morning last summer you would have seen a ceiling just covered with balloons. We used a helium tank to blow up many, many balloons to make balloon bouquets for a family wedding. I had a favorite. A large balloon with “Happily Ever After” written on it.

The Gospel today has the contentment of a “Happily Ever After” at the close. It’s the parable of the sower and the seed. Three sets of seeds die. They signify those who have a negative response to Jesus’ Word. The final seed brings hope. It represents those who hear and accept God’s Word. They’ll bear fruit beyond anyone’s wildest expectations. Jesus wins the victory over all evil — the ultimate, the final happy ending.

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, for Your final victory. I pray to remember Your ultimate hope.
