Caregiving for disabled parent stirs new devotional
HUNTINGTON, Indiana – April 16, 2014 – Author and nationally-known speaker Laraine Bennett knows the pressure and stress of providing daily care for someone who is incapacitated. When her talented, artistic mother suffered a devastating stroke, Bennett stepped up to manage her care, catapulting her own life into a delicate juggle of work and family responsibility concurrent with eldercare. This experience became the catalyst for her new book, A Year of Grace: 365 Reflections for Caregivers (Our Sunday Visitor, 2014), designed to give hope, encouragement, and inspiration to the caregiver.
Using her personal familiarity and perspective, as well as quotes from scripture and other sources, A Year of Grace provides daily respite for the weary caregiver, as Bennett reminds readers of the dignity of every human life, and encourages them to bring Christ’s love to those in their care. A Year of Grace was written to appeal to professional caregivers as well as to those who assist a sick or injured family member of any age.
As the book was going to press, Bennett’s mother passed away. “The incapacitating stroke that took nearly everything from her but her laughter and her love for family and nature,” stated Bennett, “was also a blessing that brought us together in a wholly different way. I will be forever grateful for the gift and blessing of her life.”
