The Word of the Lord: 7 Principles Catholic Scripture Study

Distinctly Catholic approach to Scripture study links the Word to Church teachings

HUNTINGTON, Indiana, October 18, 2012 – In a new book by scripture scholar Steven C. Smith, Ph.D., Word of the Lord: 7 Essential Principles for Catholic Scripture Study (2012 Our Sunday Visitor), readers are presented with a uniquely Catholic approach to Bible study, overlaying Scripture study with an explanation of how it relates to Catholic faith and beliefs. The book also delivers concrete answers to frequently asked questions by non-Catholics.

Smith is the Assistant Professor of Sacred Scripture at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD, yet designed the book specifically to be accessible to Catholics at any level of understanding of the Church and Scripture.

Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago, stated, “This is a helpful book at a time when the relations between Scripture and Tradition and Scripture and Divine Revelation are background for many conversations in the Church today.”

Dr. Dianne Traflet, Seton Hall University, calls the book, “eminently scholarly, but consistently readable, gently helping the reader move from the pages of this book to the pages of Holy Scripture.”

Each chapter of the book includes quotes from popes, saints, Fathers of the Church, passages from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and other important church documents, questions for reflection, as well as Bible verses that underline the key principles of Scripture study.

Speaking frequently at parishes and events around the country, and as a guest on national radio and television programs, Smith is known for his ability to break down the meaning behind Sacred Scripture as it relates to the Catholic faith.

Scripture scholar, Scott Hahn, Ph.D., states in his “Foreword” to the book, “No matter what your background, here you will find may practical examples and memorable illustrations to help digest each lesson. And that’s why I predict that when you are finished reading The Word of the Lord, you will say, Thanks be to God.”
