Staying Close

Without fail, once a semester a student in my Shakespeare class will ask, “Do you think Shakespeare really wrote all of his plays?” My answer is always the same: “I don’t know and I don’t care.” I then explain that the plays matter to me more than the author. At heart, I’m not interested in the various theories of authorship.

In a similar vein, I feel much the same about Mary Magdalene. I do not care what her specific relationship with Jesus was. While theological insight and fictional forays can bring new insights into Mary Magdalene, her Gospel essence fascinates me. Jesus loved her deeply. She loved Him. In celebrating her feast, we honor the life of a woman who was devoted to Jesus Christ, who stayed close to Him. Always.

Prayer: Mary Magdalen, thank you for your transparent and translucent love of Jesus.
