Mass Readings: Acts 3:1–10/Luke 24:13–35
Break from Expectations
Throughout the Easter season, the first reading at Mass is not from the Old Testament but from the New, the Book of Acts. The Resurrection event is such a break from reality as we expect it to be that the Church expresses it liturgically.
In today’s reading from Acts, Peter and John come upon a beggar, “crippled from birth,” outside the Temple. The beggar expects alms, but Peter tells him, in the beautiful King James Version, “Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have I give thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk” (Acts 3:6). And he does. Like the Resurrection, this is a surprise, a break from what’s expected. This is a season of surprises.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, continue to surprise me with unexpected gifts. Alleluia!
