Mass Readings: Isaiah 22:19-23/Romans 11:33-36/Matthew 16:13-20

President of the Club

I think St. Peter, in all of his humility, might have agreed with the comedian who said, “I wouldn’t want to be a member of any club that would want me as a member.” Jesus not only wanted Peter for His club, He wanted Peter to be the first president. This was the same Peter who had shown his lack of fidelity any number of times. This was the same Peter who said, “I do not know the man, Jesus.” And yet it is also the same Peter who in today’s reading says from the bottom of his heart: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus then replies, “Blessed are you.”

He says the same to us as well when we finally and sincerely come around in faith.

Prayer: Lord, You give us lots of “second chances” to love and believe. Thank You!
