Mass Readings: Acts 4:23–31/John 3:1–8
Spirit of Unpredictability
Today’s Gospel is about Nicodemus, who speaks with Jesus about being born again in the Spirit through baptism. Jesus tells him, “The wind blows where it wills . . . but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit” (Jn 3:8).
Has the Spirit blown you to surprising places, where you have to reconcile what you thought you knew with what you know now? Brought up in the Church, I was surprised that the Spirit led me to a Jewish wife. I was also surprised when the Spirit introduced me to a brain tumor. Each time I had to adjust my thinking and my spiritual life to new circumstances. It’s a spiritually enriching challenge for those born of water and Spirit.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, Comforter, keep me steady in an ever-changing world.
