Acts 2:42–47/1 Peter 1:3–9/John 20:19–31
Gift of Sacraments
Until I heard a homily from my pastor, I’d gotten out of the habit of frequent confessions. He said that of course the God of mercies can forgive our sins outside the Sacrament of Reconciliation. But can we be certain that our sins are forgiven? Likewise, God can make the bread and wine in any Christian ceremony into Christ’s Body and Blood. After all, He’s God. But can we be certain transubstantiation has occurred?
Today’s Gospel includes the institution of the Sacrament of Reconciliation: “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them” (Jn 20:23). Thus, if your sins are forgiven by a priest acting in the person of Christ, you can be certain they’re forgiven, just as you can be certain that bread and wine consecrated by a priest are Christ’s Body and Blood.
We thank You, Lord, for blessing Your Church with the sacraments. Alleluia!
