Mass Readings: Acts 4:13–21/Mark 16:9–15
On the back of a holy card at my father’s funeral more than 20 years ago was the English translation of the Latin hymn, “In Paradisum”: “May the angels lead you into Paradise, may the martyrs receive you at your coming and take you to the Holy City of Jerusalem. May the choir of angels greet you and like Lazarus, who once was a poor man, may you have eternal rest.”
All the events recounted in the Scripture readings during this weeklong celebration of Easter took place in the earthly Jerusalem. I’m very lucky and happy to have visited Jerusalem as a pilgrim more than once, but because of Jesus’ actions commemorated liturgically these last couple of weeks, the heavenly Jerusalem has been opened to us all.
Prayer: Angels and saints, may you one day greet us at the gates of Jerusalem. Alleluia!
