Mass Readings: 1 John 1:5-2:2/Matthew 2:13-18

Rachel’s Tears Today

“A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be consoled, since they were no more.” Matthew quotes Jeremiah’s poignant picture of Rachel weeping over the children taken into exile. Rachel herself had not delivered her children over to exile and possibly slaughter. But what if she had — and then later realized the horror of what she’d done? How much more bitter would those tears be?

Today’s “Rachels” are the women who deliver their unborn children over to abortion and later come to realize “I killed my baby, my child.” Panic, controlling boyfriends, abortionists’ lies . . . the reason doesn’t matter after the fact. What matters is that these women receive compassion, guidance, and healing, perhaps through the Church’s Project Rachel ministry.

Prayer: Dearest Mother Mary, guide women who are on the verge of a terrible decision.
