Heralding the Lord

When our children were little we ran out of milk every Christmas Eve — every single one! — and then Daddy would have to get a gallon from the convenience store. The kids always came with him to help. And guess what! Every year — every single one!—when they came home with the milk, Santa Claus had been there! Presents around the tree were indisputable proof. Ah, the things we do for our kids.

Today’s Gospel gives us a beautiful picture of Zechariah tenderly telling his infant son John (the Baptist) of his future mission. “You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way.” Zechariah, Elizabeth, and John were also a holy family, fulfilling the role God set out for them.

Prayer: Zechariah, Elizabeth, and John, help me prepare for the coming of the Lord.
