Mass Readings: Isaiah 10:7-14/Romans 1:1-7/Matthew 1:18-24
I make great plans for Advent. For quietly awaiting the coming of the Savior and meditating on the prophecies describing Him, such as we have in today’s reading from Isaiah: “Therefore, the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.”
My Advent plan is that by doing this quiet waiting and meditating I’ll experience a rush of greater appreciation for the miracle of the Incarnation. But pre-Christmas days have a way of adding pre-Christmas concerns, activities and duties (some of them labeled “Grandkids”). I never do as much waiting and meditating as I’d like but perhaps my lofty expectations have a touch of spiritual pride, so I’ll be satisfied with what happens.
Prayer: Jesus, I want to wait for You without spiritual pride.
