Mass Readings: 1 John 4:19–5:4/Luke 4:14-22a

‘Annoyed’ by the Spirit

Pope Francis has been called casual and approachable. I happily agree. In one homily he spoke frankly: “The Holy Spirit annoys us. Because He moves us, He makes us journey, He pushes the Church to go forward. . . . And this is bothersome. Convenience is nicer.”

In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims the inconvenient truth of His Spirit-filled ministry. He fulfills the Scripture that He reads. He brings the good news to the poor, the captives, the sick, the oppressed. And I, in following Him, am called to do the same. I need to be annoyed by the Holy Spirit. I need to answer some questions. How is God pushing me to go forward at this time? What bothersome thing is the Holy Spirit calling me to do now?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to know Your will and to do it. Annoy me!
