Mass Readings: Numbers 24:2-7,15-17a/Matthew 21:23-27

‘Father, Forgive Them’

Today’s Gospel reading features another confrontation between Jesus and the chief priests and elders. It’s a frequent and familiar scenario throughout the Gospels. And, as usual, Jesus “wins.” But they “win” the final confrontation. They get what they’ve been trying to get for quite some time. They kill Him; they have Him crucified. But in a cosmic, divine turnaround, Jesus is raised to new life. And because of that, death isn’t really death anymore. It’s the entrance into an eternal life of ecstatically sharing in the very life and glory of God. But what about those chief priests and elders? “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Lk 23:34).

We can’t know God’s final judgment of anyone. But we do know Jesus died to make eternal life possible for all.

Prayer: Father, help me to be as forgiving as Your Son was on the cross.
