Mass Readings: Isaiah 40:25-31/Matthew 11:28-30

Walking Will Suffice

“They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles’ wings; they will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint,” Isaiah says in today’s first reading. Most of us can think of situations in which we wish that were true of us, such as the soon to come “holidays,” often viewed with resignation rather than the anticipated joy of Christmastide. Run through them and not grow weary? To borrow parlance from the younger generation, “That would be, like, so cool!”

Perhaps we could take steps to cut back on the too-frenetic activity, the too-high expectations, the too-large expenditures. Soar? Run? Perhaps we should be grateful to “walk and not grow faint.”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, keep me focused on You as Christmas draws nearer.
