Mass Readings: 1 Kings 12:26-32; 13:33-34/Mark 8:1-10

Fake vs. Real

Jeroboam committed rank idolatry for a purely political purpose. He couldn’t have his people go off to worship God in Jerusalem since that was the capital of Judah. They might, he feared, return to loyalty to the House of David if he let them do that. So he invented a fake religion, with fake feasts and fake priests and fake shrines and fake gods — golden calves, no less. And it worked. Israel abandoned God.

Jesus, in contrast, offered a real miraculous feast that not only called Israel back to the God who gave them manna in the wilderness, but looked forward to the day when the ultimate Son of David, the true priest and sacrifice, would give Israel a true feast on the body, blood, soul and divinity of God himself.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Eucharist.
