Mass Readings: 1 Kings 10:1-10/Mark 7:14-23

In and Out

The Queen of Sheba was wowed by the gorgeousness of Solomon’s court. And the sacred author takes a certain patriotic pride as well in detailing the magnificence of Solomon’s reign. Nothing wrong with that. We all have “Hey! Check this out!” moments where we want people to see something beautiful. The trick, of course, is not to get caught up in surface stuff. For what really matters is what can’t be seen. The Queen of Sheba recognized that the central truth about Solomon was his wisdom within, not the gold and ivory without.

Jesus points to the same truth when He says that it isn’t what goes into the belly but what comes out of the heart that matters. Solomon’s wealth is long gone, but the wisdom he sought is still available.

Prayer: Jesus, Wisdom of God, share Your riches with us all.
