Mass Readings: 1 John 5:14-21/John 3:22-30

Bigger and Smaller

We recently had what author Lewis Carroll called an “unbirthday party.” It was following a wedding so family members we rarely saw joined us in this zany gathering. During part of the celebration the children watched the old Disney movie Alice in Wonderland. I was struck by how often a change in one’s size is an ingredient in what happens. Sections of the plot hinge on Alice getting larger and smaller.

Today’s Gospel also highlights size changes, but they’re spiritual ones. John joyfully tells his followers that Jesus must increase and he must decrease. What a paradox. To grow bigger spiritually I must grow smaller. Yet if I do so, my joy — like John’s — will increase.

Prayer: Thank you Lord, for Your presence. Help me to decrease and You to increase in me.
