Mass Readings: 1 Kings 17:1-6/Matthew 5:1-12

God Nurtures Us

Humans are nurtured in numerous ways. Our physical sustenance is provided by food, but we need much more. We receive the love of family and friends; we seek the support of work colleagues, athletic teammates, and neighbors. God, however, provides our great sustenance; He’s the one who nurtures us always. Today’s readings speak about how God nurtured the Jews in varied ways. Elisha the prophet was provided with meat by ravens sent by God. Jesus provides comfort in the famous Beatitudes, proclaimed in His Sermon on the Mount.

The Lord sustains us today in similar ways. All that we have — food, love, entertainment and shelter — have their origins in God. As God nurtures us, so must we nurture our brothers and sisters. It’s our Christian call; let’s respond generously.

Prayer: Benevolent God, thank You for nurturing me in body, mind, and spirit.
