Mass Readings: Acts 15:7-21/John 15:9-11

A ‘Cloud of Witnesses’

“Do Catholics have a patron saint for everything?” a Protestant friend asked. “Pretty much,” I replied. “OK, who’s the patron saint for . . . cooks?” she asked. “Martha,” I answered. We do have thousands of canonized of saints. Of the two dozen remembered on May 22, I’d only heard of St. Rita, a patron of impossible causes. (I’m sure St. Jude doesn’t mind sharing.)

Hebrews says, “Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us persevere in running the race that lies before us” (12:1). Billions of those witnesses will never be canonized, yet they lived and died devoted to God. Who are some holy people who have touched — and still touch — your life? What saints, canonized or not, living or deceased, do you turn to for support when you have a need?

Prayer: God, thank You for Your cloud of witnesses both within and beyond the Church.
