Mass Readings: Acts 15:1-6/John 15:1-8

A Douglas fir in our yard was being strangled by ivy, so I severed the plant at its base and pulled some away from the tree. In a week, the ivy looked droopy; in a month it was dead; eventually it fell off the tree. Forty years later, the tree still thrives.

In today’s Gospel Jesus says, “I am the vine, you are the branches. Without me you can do nothing.” Without Jesus we’re like that “post-op” ivy plant. The problem is, severing ourselves from God’s vine usually is more subtle than what I did to that vine, and “doing nothing” for God rarely feels like doing nothing. We’re so busy. We’re so important. That’s where daily prayer can come in. It helps us stay connected to God.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of prayer. Help me stay connected to You.
